Deco Captain — Privacy Policy
Effective Date: April 3, 2026
Version: 1.4.0
This Privacy Policy describes how Aquatic Instruments LLC ("Company," "we," "us," or "our"), a Washington State limited liability company, collects, uses, and protects information in connection with the Deco Captain mobile application ("App") and the website located at https://www.decocaptain.com ("Website"). Together, the App and Website are referred to as the "Services."
By using the Services, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services. Your use of the Services is also subject to our Terms of Use, available within the App and at https://www.decocaptain.com/terms-of-use.
1. Overview
Deco Captain is designed with privacy in mind. The App does not require an account or login, does not collect your name or email address through the App, and stores your dive plans and preferences locally on your device. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers, data brokers, or any third party for marketing purposes.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information Stored on Your Device
The following data is created and stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to us unless you take an explicit action (such as submitting a bug report or sharing a link):
- Dive plans and profiles — decompression plans, gas configurations, depth/time parameters, and related planning data.
- User preferences and settings — your chosen units, gradient factors, algorithm settings, and other App configuration choices.
This data remains on your device and under your control. If you enable iCloud sync (when available), this data may be synced across your Apple devices through Apple's iCloud/CloudKit service, subject to Apple's privacy policy.
2.2 Analytics and Diagnostics
We collect analytics and diagnostic data to help us understand how the App is used, identify issues, and improve performance. This data is collected through Google Firebase, a third-party analytics, crash reporting, and performance monitoring service provided by Google LLC. Firebase may collect the following:
- App usage patterns (e.g., screen views, feature usage, session duration)
- Crash reports, stack traces, and diagnostic logs
- App performance data (e.g., startup time, network request latency)
- Device type, operating system version, and device locale (e.g., en-US)
- App version and build number
- Network connection type (e.g., Wi-Fi, cellular)
- Country and region (derived from IP address)
- An anonymous, randomly generated app instance identifier assigned by Firebase
Analytics data may also be collected through Apple's built-in analytics services, subject to your device settings.
Analytics data is associated with a randomly generated identifier unique to your app installation. It does not include your name, email address, or other directly identifying information. We do not collect advertising identifiers (IDFA) or use analytics data for advertising, ad targeting, or user profiling.
2.3 Information You Choose to Share
Bug reports and diagnostic data — if you submit a bug report, it includes a diagnostic payload containing the following categories of information to help us reproduce and resolve the issue:
- Device information — hardware model, operating system version, thermal state, Low Power Mode status, network connectivity status and interface type (e.g., Wi-Fi, cellular), device locale, preferred languages, and timezone.
- Display and layout — screen dimensions, display scale factors, color scheme (light or dark), layout direction, device form factor, size classes, and safe area geometry.
- App state — a randomly generated install identifier unique to your app installation, your Firebase analytics app instance identifier (if you have chosen to include it), app install date, build configuration, and user-selected display preferences within the App.
- Purchase and entitlement state — whether in-app purchases are unlocked, purchase status, localized product name and price, and transaction environment (Production, Sandbox, or Xcode). This category also includes your Apple-assigned transaction identifier, which can be cross-referenced with purchase records in Apple's systems; your App Store storefront country code (e.g., "USA"), which indicates the country whose App Store you are registered with; and whether your purchase was made directly or obtained through Apple's Family Sharing. These fields are included to help diagnose purchase and entitlement issues.
- Storage and memory — app bundle size, app document storage size, free and total device storage, app memory footprint, and free and total system memory.
- Accessibility settings (optional) — if you choose to include accessibility information when submitting a bug report, the diagnostic payload will also contain your accessibility and display settings, such as Reduce Motion, Bold Text, Increase Contrast, Invert Colors, Reduce Transparency, Button Shapes, and related preferences. These settings help diagnose layout and display issues but may reflect personal needs. This information is not included unless you explicitly enable it.
Bug reports may also include your dive plan data, gas configurations, user preferences and settings, and any information you voluntarily provide in your description of the issue. Bug reports are transmitted only when you take explicit action to share them (e.g., via email).
Shareable diagnostic links — the App allows you to generate a shareable link that encodes diagnostic data into the URL itself. Shareable diagnostic links contain your dive plan data and the same categories of diagnostic information described above for bug reports, including accessibility settings if you have chosen to include them. Anyone with access to the link can view this data. We do not control how recipients use or share these links.
Shareable plan links — the App allows you to share dive plans and settings with others via a link. When you generate a shareable plan link, your dive plan data and relevant settings are encoded into the URL itself. Anyone with access to the link can view this data. We do not control how recipients use or share these links. When you create a short link, a copy of your dive plan data is also transmitted to and stored on our servers. The stored data is the same dive plan content that is encoded into the self-contained URL. Stored plan files are automatically deleted after 24 months of inactivity (see Section 5). You may request deletion of a stored plan at any time (see Section 8.2).
Contact form and email — if you contact us through the Website contact form or via email, we collect the information you provide, such as your name, email address, and message content. We use this information solely to respond to your inquiry.
2.4 Website Data
When you visit our Website, our hosting provider may automatically collect server log data, including your IP address, browser type, referring page, and pages visited. We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising purposes.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
- To provide and maintain the Services.
- To improve the App's functionality, performance, and user experience.
- To diagnose and fix bugs, crashes, and technical issues.
- To respond to your inquiries and support requests.
- To comply with legal obligations.
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or automated decision-making.
4. How We Share Your Information
We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing or advertising purposes.
We may share information in the following limited circumstances:
- Service providers — we use Google Firebase (provided by Google LLC) for analytics, crash reporting, and performance monitoring. Firebase processes data on our behalf in accordance with Google's privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy) and Firebase's data processing terms. We may also use other third-party services for hosting that process data on our behalf. These providers are contractually obligated to use your data only to provide their services to us and in accordance with applicable privacy laws.
- Apple — analytics and diagnostic data may be shared with Apple through their built-in services, subject to Apple's privacy policy and your device settings.
- iCloud/CloudKit — if you enable iCloud sync, your dive plan data and settings are synced through Apple's CloudKit service. Apple processes this data in accordance with its privacy policy.
- Legal requirements — we may disclose information if required to do so by law, regulation, or legal process, or if we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect our rights, your safety, or the safety of others.
- Your choice — when you generate a shareable link or submit a bug report, you are choosing to share your data. We are not responsible for how third parties who receive your shared data use it.
5. Data Retention
- On-device data — dive plans, profiles, and preferences remain on your device until you delete them or uninstall the App. We do not have access to this data unless you share it with us.
- iCloud data — synced data is retained in your iCloud account under your control and subject to Apple's data retention practices.
- Analytics and diagnostics — aggregated analytics data is processed and retained by our analytics service providers in accordance with their respective privacy and retention policies.
- Contact form and email correspondence — we retain your communications for up to 36 months after your inquiry is resolved, after which they are deleted or anonymized.
- Bug reports — diagnostic payloads and associated correspondence are retained for up to 36 months after the reported issue is resolved, after which they are deleted.
- Stored dive plans — dive plan files uploaded through the short link sharing feature are stored on our servers and automatically deleted after 24 months of inactivity (no access via the short link). Each access refreshes the retention window. Deletion removes the stored plan and the short link alias but does not affect self-contained plan URLs that may have been shared independently.
- Server logs — web server logs collected by our hosting provider are retained according to the provider's retention schedule.
6. Data Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the information associated with our Services. On-device data benefits from the security features built into your Apple device, including encryption. However, no method of electronic storage or transmission is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Children's Privacy
The App is intended only for individuals who are at least 18 years of age or the age of majority in your jurisdiction, whichever is greater. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child, we will take steps to delete it promptly. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@aquaticinstruments.com.
8. Your Rights and Choices
8.1 Device-Level Controls
- You can disable Apple's analytics sharing in your device settings (Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements).
